5 Places to Meet Socially & Locally Minded People in YYC
Spring is here – even though it doesn’t look like it! It’s time to escape hibernation and meet some awesome Calgarians. Whether you’re trying to make new friends in your community, trying to expand your professional network or you’re just sick of trying to make a connection on Tinder, here are 5 places to meet like-minded, socially conscious people in YYC.
1) MEC on a Saturday Morning
It’s crowded. It’s a cooperative. It’s outdoor enthusiasts and wannabe mountain goers overload. You’re destined to brush shoulders with someone with similar interests here. Linger by the avalanche beacons and you could learn a lesson that could save your life. Grab a ticket to try on shoes and impress shoppers by climbing the mock incline. Or just test out the sleeping bags because they’re fun and cozy.
2) Community Natural Foods (10th Avenue) during any given lunch hour
With the forced intimacy of sharing a table with complete strangers and the inevitable eye lock with the lunch time goer across from you – you’re destined to strike up a conversation with an interesting guy or gal. The lunch tables are packed, taking you back to your middle school cafeteria days – but the food is way better and the age range is way wider.
3) Market Collective DIY Workshops
Oh the market collective workshops! I can’t rave enough about how awesome these workshops are. Whether you’re learning the art of making mead or imagining your summer time food forest, you’ll be bonding with the eager student next to you. Or at the very least, you’ve just found a buddy for the Market Collective photo-booth. . And if you’re having trouble making friends, try chatting with the talented instructors -they’re always happy to make a new pal.
4) The Roasterie/Caffe Rosso/Analog
Regardless of which community you’re in, hipsters still love coffee. Small talk the barista about whether they prefer an aeropress or a slow drip at Analog. Challenge the 30-something guy, reading Fast Fwd magazine, to a game of chess at the Roasterie. Or grab your laptop and get writing that novel of yours at Caffe Rosso. Regardless of where you frequent, start looking up and around, you’re surrounded by fair trade supporters.
5) Sustainability for Breakfast
If you haven’t attended this series yet – you should. Even though you love owls, you’ve never considered yourself a night owl. So get back in your early morning element, and share stories of collaboration and sustainability at this monthly event. Exchange business cards, chat about your red worm compost and meet someone new to volunteer with. And if you can’t make it out of bed, follow the hashtag #S4Byyc, you can still meet someone on Twitter. I’ve heard new connections, ideas and dates sprouting from each of these events or locations, so why not give them a shot?
